How to Build a Catapult for Projects

How to Build a Catapult for Projects

Catapults are large-scale weapons that were originally created to hurl large, heavy objects over castle or fort walls. While learning about medieval warfare, build a catapult model to test out how these ancient machines actually function. Not only will the catapult project look similar to a real catapult found during the time of medieval warfare, but it is actually functional and can allow you to hurl small, soft objects across your yard or classroom.

Instructions

    1

Place three wooden dowels into a triangle, and tape together the corners tightly using duct tape. Repeat this process two more times to create three taped-together wooden dowel triangles.

    2

Place two of the triangles together along one of the sides, and angle the triangles apart by 60 degrees. Tape the touching sides together tightly using duct tape.

    3

Stand the taped together triangles upright onto a table top, and lay the third triangle flat onto the tape in front of the opening. Slide the flat triangle in between the upright triangles, which will fit perfectly. Tape all of the sides together tightly using duct tape. This creates a pyramid that appears to have one side missing.

    4

Position the pyramid form in front of you with the missing side facing you. Insert the remaining wooden dowel into the corner where all of the triangles meet, and angle the wooden dowel at a 45 degree angle from the bottom of the pyramid. Tape the end of the dowel onto the corner using duct tape, maintaining the 45 degree angle.

    5

Insert a hot glue stick into a hot glue gun, and plug in the hot glue gun to heat up for five minutes.

    6

Squeeze a pea-sized dollop of hot glue onto the end of the angled wooden dowel. Press the back of a plastic bottle cap onto the hot glue dollop, and hold it in place for one minute to allow the hot glue to cool and harden.

    7

Loop a rubber band around the back of the plastic bottle cap, then loop the rubber band around the top of the pyramid. You can now place a soft object into the plastic bottle cap, pull back the wooden dowel, then let it go to launch the object.
