Lets Build a Rubber Band Catapult
Catapults can hurl dangerous projectiles across long distances with destructive results. While building a full-sized catapult is usually unfeasible and could prove unsafe, it only takes a few household items to build a small, functional catapult. Builders can make a catapult for fun, competitions, or as a science project. A catapult can provide a useful science project to demonstrate a lever, which is a simple machine, in action.
Instructions
- 1
Place the hanger flat on a table with the hook facing away from you.
2Bend both corners of the hanger up so they form two identical, vertical triangle-shaped arms.
3Stretch one rubber band around both triangle arms.
4Place the spoon's handle between the rubber bands with the back of the spoon facing the hanger's hook.
5Twist the rubber band several times by rotating the spoon. Twist the back of the spoon toward the hanger's hook.
6Place another rubber band over both triangles, above the first rubber band.
7Twist the second rubber band several times by hand.
8Make a space in between the twists of the second rubber band and slip the bowl of the spoon through the top rubber band to keep the spoon upright. The rubber band should not cover the bowl.
9Hold the base of the hanger steady by the hook. Then load a small, light projectile into the spoon, pull the spoon back and release it.
