What You Should Know About Making an Origami Catapult

Origami is the art of folding paper and can be used to create nearly anything, including play catapults. A catapult made of paper won't be able to launch large or heavy objects, but can easily throw a crumpled paper ball. This catapult is relatively simple to make, and can be very exciting to use. Use the origami catapult to shoot a goal, or to help make a game of war more realistic. Use a stiff paper when creating the catapult for the best results.

Instructions

    1

Lay a square piece of paper in front of you, with a corner facing you.

    2

Fold the paper in half, bringing the right hand corner to touch the left hand corner, creating a vertical center line. Unfold.

    3

Bring the bottom corner to touch the top corner. Pinch the paper at the center line, to create a center point. Unfold the paper.

    4

Fold the top corner about one-third of the way down. The point should rest on the vertical center line to keep everything even.

    5

Fold the upper left hand edge of the paper in to the right. What was the left side of the top edge will rest squarely along the top of the vertical center line. Fold the upper right hand edge in. Folding these two edges creates a hidden pocket at the top corner of the model.

    6

Open the paper slightly, and then pull the hidden flap at the top corner out and up. Keep the upper right and left hand edges folded down. The hidden flap will stick straight up and looks like a triangle.

    7

Fold the new upper left edge all the way in to the right, so it lies along the center line. Fold the upper right edge in to the left, so it also lies along the center line.

    8

Fold the bottom corner of the model up and behind, so that it touches the back side of the upper corner. Flatten the crease. The model should resemble a peacock.

    9

Fold the entire model in half along the vertical center line, bringing the left corner to touch the right.

    10

Rotate the model to the left, so the upper point now points to the left. Pick the model up.

    11

Hold the bottom of the model in your right hand, while you use your left hand to pull up on the left triangular flap. Keep pulling the flap up until it's even with the upper edges of the base of the model. Then, pinch the bottom of the model to keep the flap in its new position.

    12

Fold the upper left and right edges of the base of the model down, so the corners are even with the bottom edge of the model. This allows the catapult to stand on its own.

    13

Open the triangular flap slightly, creating the bowl of the catapult. Load the bowl, then pull the arm back toward the base of the model. Release it to fling the projectile.
